O what a beautiful morning

How high is an elephant's eye, anyway?

I'm not sure if we're there yet, but it's coming close. The corn is anywhere from six to eight feet tall, two ears on each stalk, and they feel like they're developing nicely.

It's kind of hard to tell how they're doing, since I've never grown corn before, but they aren't quite full-sized and they don't feel quite as thick as they should, so I think they'll be ready to eat in another week, maybe two.

Corn is something new for me to grow, and I wasn't sure how much I would enjoy it, but even without getting something to eat at the end, this has been fun to watch develop. I'll definitely grow it again next year.

Did you hand pollinate? Hope it tastes fabulous!

It's planted really close together, so I thought it would self-pollinate, but I decided better safe than sorry, and did it anyway.

My dad always slipped the foot of pantyhose (or the equivalent nylon) over the ear after it was fertilized to keep bugs out.

I was always glad he did that instead of using insecticide as he usually did. He knew he couldn't share insecticide-dusted food with me!

Enjoy your corn. There's nothing better than fresh-picked vegetables.

The silks on the ears will turn brown before the corn is ready. If it pollinated well, the ears should feel full. I grew up on a farm, eating sweet corn 20 minutes after it was pulled from the stalk. I am a total corn snob now and will not eat it from commercial sources. I know what it should taste like, lol.
